Are Katanas used in Kendo?

More specifically, does the training and discipline of Kendo prepare for the use of a Katana? Can i use a Katana instead of a Shinai or Bokuto after i am a higher kyu in Kendo? I was thinking Iaito but it is more for the theatre than actual combat so i am not sure.... please answer as accurately as you can. Arigato...
