My house was built in the 50's and has been re-done. Can you paint over that fake looking tile?

In the bathroom it has that stuff that looks like linoleum with a rough surface. Can I paint over it and if I can what should I use. It has a slick texture to it and I know if you use regular paint it will slide off!! Can you help me?
